From 2007 - 2014 I was a freelance stage manager.
I started Stage Managing at the age of 17 in Palo Alto, CA at the Dragon Theater for a show called Maybe, Baby, it’s You. I fell in love with the theater scene, and attended Cornish College of the Arts to study Stage Management. After I graduated I began freelancing.
Below are some highlights from that time.

I was responsible for setting up the rehearsal space - which in this case was an outdoor lawn in Seattle Center. I wheeled over the rehearsal props and set up the rehearsal space. I managed the logistics for daily rehearsals, and scheduled costume fittings, making sure everyone showed up when and where they were supposed to. I sent out written reports at the end of every rehearsal with notes on what was covered, and anything that was decided or changed that may affect the other designers.
I was responsible for leading tech rehearsals including a cue-to-cue and a run in real time.

Once the show opened I was responsible for making sure the stage is set - all the props and costumes are store in the correct places and the actors are ready backstage.  I was responsible for assisting with backstage prop handoffs, quick costume changes and preparing scene transitions. At the end of every show I sent out a report of how it went. Additionally, I coordinated a shuttle to take the student actors to and from campus at the right times.

What made this production unique is that the cast was entirely made up of teachers at Cornish College of the Arts. That was part of the mission of the Operating Theater was to encourage students in the theatre department to come to rehearsals and see the process of building a show.

I was responsible for setting up the rehearsal rooms and the theatre space. I managed the logistics for daily rehearsals, and schedule costume fittings. I sent out reports at the end of every rehearsal with notes that may affect the other designers.

, Once the show opened I was responsible for making sure the stage is set, communicating to the house manager, and calling the light and sound cues. At the end of each performance I sent out a report to designers and producers.

This show was a collaboration between Cornish College's early music program, theater department and performance production department.

I managed the logistics for daily rehearsals, and scheduled costume fittings. I sent out reports at the end of each rehearsal with notes on what was covered, and anything that was decided or changed that may affect the other designers (costumes, props, lighting, sound, projections etc).

I led tech rehearsals that included:
  • A sitzprobe - a rehearsal where the singers sing with the orchestra, focusing attention on integrating the two groups.
  • A cue-to-cue which brings together all the elements – orchestra, sound, lighting, props, set, projections, costumes and actors.
  • A run in real time, with all elements of the production, with only essential stops in cases where adjustments need to be made.
I was responsible for making sure the stage is set for each show, communicating with the house manager, and calling the light and sound cues. At the end of each show I sent out a report of how it went.

As an assistant stage manager for this production I was a part of a stage management team. communicative link between the director, the designers and the cast to make sure that everything goes smoothly from the first read-through to final performance.

I was responsible for helping to set up the rehearsal rooms and the theatre space. I assisted with rehearsal room setup - taping out the set on the floor, arranging rehearsal props and costumes, taking line notes, and attending weekly meetings.

I was responsible for helping backstage during tech rehearsals that included a cue-to-cue and a real-time run. During the show I assisted with prop handoffs, costume changes, and scenic transitions as needed. I reported any broken props or costumes to the appropriate people and help to reset the stage at the end of each performance.

These Streets was an unconventional theatrical play and history project, inspired by women rock musicians in Seattle during the famed grunge years.

I was responsible for setting up the rehearsal rooms and the theatre space. I managed the logistics for daily rehearsals, and scheduled costume fittings. I sent out written reports at the end of every rehearsal with notes on what was covered, and anything that was decided or changed that may affect the other designers (costumes, props, lighting, sound etc).

I was responsible for leading tech rehearsals. During the run I was responsible for making sure the stage is set, communicating with the house manager, and finally I calling the light and sound cues from the booth overlooking the stage. At the end of every show I sent out a report of how it went.

This show was unique in that there were multiple possible endings determined by an audience vote. So we had to prepare everything for each possible ending, and be ready to call the show based on that audience's choice.

I won the Kennedy Center award for Excellence in Stage Management. A representative from the Kennedy Center came out to see the show and evaluate us for talent, and invited me to come to New York for a Stage Management competition which I declined in favor of continuing to work.
